![]() ![]() Hannibal was breaking a lot of rules just moving that army across the Alps, so building that mechanic into the game but making it a "Hannibal Only" move would be tricky and now that we know what he did, it's obviously a go-to strategy to us that few back then would have considered. I like the idea of Hannibal at the Gates, but I can't see how they'd handle it. Perhaps I'll try Caesar in Gaul from the other side and see if Vercingetorix can keep it independent and push Caesar back. I enjoyed defying history and trying to hold Jerusalem. One of my favorite DLCs ever made for the franchise was the Crusader Kingdoms add-on for Medieval II that takes place entirely in the Levant after the first Crusade. I probably will try Caesar in Gaul, though I haven't bought it, yet. Thing is, most contemporaries of the day were walking around speaking Greek. (All of Gaul is divided into three parts.) I don't remember a ton of Latin, but I remember enjoying that. I know how pretentious this sounds, but to read the opening paragraph of Caesar's commentaries on the Gallic wars in the original Latin is really cool. Sorry if that was too much all at once - I'd probably recommend S.P.Q.R or The Rise of Rome to start off with. It's pretty much a comprehensive guide to the Imperial Roman military, and it's one of my favorite books of all time. It includes information on what life was like in the Legions, including pay, honors and punishments, life on the march, siege warfare, and more. It provides information about every known Legion during the Imperial period their foundation, their battles, their insignia. It's called Legions of Rome, by Stephen Dando-Collins. The second book is all about military history. It details the lesser-known period of time before the Punic Wars, with Rome's beginnings as a simple village as well as providing the context of what was going on in the rest of Italy at the time. The first is The Rise of Rome, by Kathryn Lomas. There are two other books that are little more niche but I heartily endorse. It covers a period of almost a thousand years, and it involves pretty much all elements of Roman history society, politics, mythology, etc. ![]() The translator gives a lot of the historical context for the work and provides critical analysis of it alongside the text, it's very well-done.Ī good sort of all-around history book would be S.P.Q.R, by Mary Beard. This version is called The War For Gaul, and it was translated by James O'Donnell. I just finished reading a new translation of it, which is - in my opinion - the best one out there. It's definitely on my bucket list, though.Īs for books, it sort of depends on whether you prefer primary or secondary sources.Ī great primary source is, of course, Caesar's Gallic War. I've only been to Europe once and sadly that was before I developed such a keen interest in Roman history so I didn't make Italy a priority. I'm very jealous of you for living in Italy.
